That essential piece of kit, the fly box, is usually made today from a piece of industrial plastic. Nothing wrong with that – it’s affordable, often clear enough to see through, sturdy and some are fairly buoyant – but as a gift for a friend, or something to pass on to a son or daughter, they have all the appeal of socks for Christmas. Um, gee thanks.
Thankfully someone out there gets it that on a special occasion, or for those whose tastes run that way, only something classic will do – enter the Vermont Fly Box Company. Let me declare up front that I don’t know these guys and have no ties to them at all – I just know that they make the very best fly boxes around. Gorgeous, durable, practical. One of these babies could become a brag piece for your grand kids.
DH organised a pair for me about six years ago, one in black walnut and the other in cherry. You can get bird’s eye maple too, plus engraving. Good wood, hand picked and well dried, precision made and natural rubbed oil finish. For the boffins the hinges are solid brass and disappear when you close the box. Rare earth magnets then shut the whole thing so well it floats. You have to see it to believe it. The foam inserts are top shelf but also replaceable.

OK, these are not the boxes to take white water rafting. They’re a joy today and tomorrow’s treasure. Not cheap – but class never is.
